Samsung Galaxy S4 Spotted In Benchmark Tests With Eight-Core Exynos 5 Octa CPU, Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is Samsung’s heavily rumored successor to the Galaxy S3 and it has popped up in rumors many times over the last few weeks. This time, the highly-anticipated Galaxy S4 has been spotted in benchmark logs, which confirm an Exynos 5 Octa CPU and Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean for the smartphone.

The numbers appeared on AnTuTu, a database of processor benchmark scores testing the performance of phones and tablets. A Korean phone called the SHV-E300S and a British phone called the GT-I9500 both showed up in the results. They could be the local and intentional modes of Samsung Galaxy S4.

The main focus here is the Exynos 5 Octa, the eight-core processor which will, according to this benchmark logs, certainly be featured on the Galaxy S4. It could well be the recently announced Samsung Exynos 5 Octa, an eight-core chip that switches between four beefy high-speed cores and four slower cores that use less power for everyday tasks. As for the OS, obviously Samsung will try to bring in the latest stable OS version Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean to their users when it comes to their flagship device, and Samsung won’t disappoint on the operating system front when it comes out.

Aside from a cutting-edge processor, Galaxy S4 is also mooted to feature a 4.99-inch Super AMOLED display with a full HD resolution, a 13-megapixel camera, S-Pen stylus support and Galaxy Note and wireless charging capabilities.

Many of those rumors suggested that Samsung would be announcing the Galaxy S4 at Mobile World Congress 2013 in Barcelona, but it appears that that may not be the case. Samsung is hotly expected to announce the S4 in April at one of its unpacked events, followed by a global launch in early May.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Officially Announced Today, Shipping in April and May

Samsung officially unveiled the long-awaited Galaxy S4 at a large event at Radio City Music Hall in New York City today, the phone includes a number of upgrades from the Galaxy S 3, which has surged to become the bestselling Android phone on the market and the leading competitor to Apple’s iPhone.

Better than Galaxy S3 (Specs Comparison)

The Galaxy S4 handset steadily draws from the same design language as the S3, but takes almost every spec to an extreme — the screen is larger (5 inches), the resolution greater (1080p), the battery capacity higher (2,600mAh), the processor faster (1.9GHz quad-core or 1.6GHz octa-core), and the rear-facing camera stuffed with more megapixels (13, to be exact).

Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, Touch Wiz

The Galaxy S4 runs none other than Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, the most up-to-date version of Android you can get right now. Riding on top of it as usual is Samsung’s Touch Wiz overlay, a customized interface that I, for one, think is getting a little long in the tooth.

Air View and Gestures

You can not only hover with a fingertip, but also wave or wipe your whole hand in front of the screen (and camera sensor) to navigate around. Hover your finger or wipe your whole hand, you can preview a video clip or image from the photo gallery, glance at browser tab thumbnails, find your place on a video timeline, and check out an e-mail. Flipboard has built a customized app to work with Air View, which lets you hover over a tile to see which articles lie beneath.

IR Blaster as Remote Control

Samsung has put an IR blaster on its phone so you can use it as a remote control for your TV. With the software you can see images of upcoming programs and control a DVR.

S Health Scale

The companion wireless scale that looks quite a bit like the Fitbit Aria is just one part of the larger S Health equation which also includes a Jawbone Up-like monitor (S Band). The scale of course sync with the baked in S Health app over Bluetooth, which makes it quite a bit easier to track how that diet of yours is going. In addition to simply tracking your total poundage, there will be bands for tracking heart rate and the S 4’s various sensor can help judge the comfort level of your environment.

Amazing 13-megapixel Camera

Samsung has also made vast improvements to its camera technology. The Galaxy S4 has a built-in 13-megapixel camera, up from the Galaxy S III’s 8-megapixel sensor, which uses new camera functions Dual Shot, Eraser, Drama Shot, and Sound & Shot. Dual Shot allows you to capture images from both the front and rear cameras simultaneously

S Translate

The Galaxy S4 ships with S Translate, a baked-in realtime translator that supports 9 different languages. The new S Translate feature offers real-time translation – simply type the question in English and it will translate it audibly. It can do the same thing in reverse, so that when you receive an answer it will translate it and present you with the answer as text.

Pricing and Availability

Samsung plans to stagger releases worldwide in April and May. In the U.S., Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Cricket Wireless will all get the Galaxy S4 (along with Sprint MVNO Ting). Samsung hasn’t yet shared plans for other countries.

Since it differs by region and by carrier, Samsung hasn’t announced the price yet, but you can expect comparable pricing in your area for the GS3.

Samsung has made sure to include every salient hardware spec and enough new and interesting software features to Galaxy S4 to hold your attention. Will it be the greatest potential winner in 2013? Stay tuned for more details!

Sony Xperia Z vs. Samsung Galaxy S4

Sony unveils its first big smartphone of the year – Sony Xperia Z at CES 2013 in Las Vegas. The Xperia Z is the company’s biggest smartphone launch thus far in 2013. It’s an attractive, well-built phone with some killer specs, but a device that’s sure to have some competition in the next couple of months. One of the devices it will encounter on the market is oft-rumored Samsung Galaxy S4, the device that will likely replace the Galaxy S3 as Samsung’s flagship later this year.

Display

Sony Xperia Z features a 5-inch 1080p Reality display with 1920 x 1080 resolution. That should translate into fantastic looking text, images and video. The display on the Galaxy S4 is expected to be a 1080p AMOLED display with 441 pixels-per-inch measuring in a 5-inch.

Camera

The photos we’ve seen snapped with the device were sharp and crisp and it should meet the demand from Xperia fans and average consumers. The Xperia Z also features a 2.2MP camera in the front which should work well for video chats.
With the Galaxy S4, Samsung is rumored to be including a 13MP camera which could mean an upgraded sensor. Paired with Samsung’s already fantastic software, we should see a better camera in the Galaxy S4 and maybe the best it has ever offered in a smartphone.
OS
The Xperia Z is going to be running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Samsung’s Galaxy S4 will also be running a version of Android though its version is unclear. Rumored are Android Jelly Bean, version unknown, and Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie.

Other Specs:

The Xperia Z is also powered with a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory storage. A microSD card slot is available for extra storage capacity, and it comes with a non-removable Li-Ion 2330 mAh battery.Samsung Galaxy S4 is speculated to feature the Exynos 5 Octa quad-core processor that was also launched during the 2013 CES. The Galaxy S4 is also rumored to have a microSD card slot with expandable memory capacity as well as a removable battery feature.

Release Date
Like many products that were announced at CES, the Xperia Z was given a release window instead of an actual release date. Sony has said that the device will be launching globally in the first quarter of this year, which means that January, February and March are all candidates for a release date.
As for the Samsung Galaxy S4, it is rumored to potentially be coming at Mobile World Congress in February in Barcelona.
Price
UK retailer Clove says that it will be selling the device for £440 in the UK plus a VAT. Pricing in the United States is still a mystery though prior to the device’s launch, it was rumored to be coming unlocked to American consumers for $650, a typical price.
No pricing has been rumored for the Samsung Galaxy S4 but we imagine that it will likely come for a familiar $199.99, which was the same price that the Galaxy S3 debuted for across all carriers but T-Mobile.
