Apple’s iPhone 5 Remains Unannounced at WWDC: Top 10 Reasons for the Delay

iPhone fans expected the announcement of iPhone 5 at Worldwide Developers Conference, but due to some irresistible reasons WWDC disappointed iPhone fans this time. Seen from a market perspective, there are some sound reasons for the delay of iPhone 5.

1. The Verizon issue
Apple had just launched its iPhone on Verizon’s network earlier this year. That could be one of the main reasons the company balked at announcing the iPhone 5 at WWDC. To release a new iPhone now would potentially hurt Verizon’s current sales and negatively impact Apple’s development cycle.

2. The white iPhone was just released
Though Apple announced the white iPhone at last year’s WWDC, the device didn’t finally hit store shelves until April. By launching a new iPhone 5 now, Apple would potentially cause trouble with those customers who bought the white iPhone believing the company wouldn’t offer a new smartphone so soon after a launch.

3. Sales are still strong
When companies release new products, they do it for one basic reason: to drum up demand. For now, demand for Apple’s iPhone is quite high, and the company’s sales figures aren’t slowing down at all. If sales were slowing, Apple would have launched a new iPhone 5 at WWDC. But sales aren’t slowing, and Apple has the luxury of being able to wait.

4. The competition isn’t forcing its hand
Though Android continues to steal market share in the operating system market, no single Android, Windows Phone 7 or BlackBerry smartphone is beating Apple’s iPhone in sales. The reason for that is simple: They don’t offer the same features or consumer appeal as Apple’s alternative so Apple isn’t forced to release a new iPhone just yet. Until Apple finds a competitor that delivers something better than what it offers, there’s no reason to show off the iPhone 5.

5. 4G isn’t ready
4G is not as readily available today as it could be. Realizing that, it’s quite possible that Apple is waiting until 4G networks are capable of handling iPhone demand before it releases a new version of its smartphone.

6. Waiting on a major upgrade
Consumers are now expecting major updates, and delivering incremental improvements might not do the job any longer. Recent rumors suggest the iPhone 5 will be another revolutionary upgrade. And as the iPhone 4 proved, delivering major upgrades takes time.

7. WWDC was about software
This year, Apple is releasing two important software updates in Mac OS X and iOS. Maybe this year, Apple wanted to stay true to what WWDC is all about and only talk software. There is still quite a bit of time for Apple to talk about a new iPhone.

8. iCloud couldn’t be overshadowed
Though iOS and Mac OS X played important roles in Apple’s keynote, it was the company’s upcoming cloud service, iCloud, that stole the show. Considering the importance of cloud computing today, Apple might have wanted all the focus to be on iCloud. After all, if the company unveiled a new smartphone, all the attention would have been on that device, and not iCloud.

9. Investors are not demanding it
Apple investors weren’t demanding that Apple announce the iPhone 5 at WWDC. Even following its announcement, investors weren’t all that concerned. Those folks realize that the iPhone 4 is doing just fine, and offering an iPhone 5, while a nice idea, isn’t necessary.

10. Customer perception
Consumers around the globe expect a new iPhone every summer, so as that time approaches, they hold back on buying a new smartphone to see what Apple offers. By not announcing the iPhone 5 this summer, Apple has thrown those folks a curve ball. Now, those who were waiting on the sidelines hoping for the iPhone 5 to appear might be more inclined to get an iPhone 4 now rather than wait weeks or months for the next update.

Also there is rumor that the performance test has been accomplished and iPhone 5 will be ready on September.

iPhone 5 Release Features Speculation: Possibility VS. Impossibility

Signs indicate Apple will cancel the convention to release the new version of iPhone in June or July, and iPhone 5 will be issued in September in turn. Does the next generation iPhone need to be resigned? Or will Apple reveal iCloud music service and iPhone 5 simultaneously?

All the speculations about iPhone 5 so far will be listed in the following:

Larger Touch Screen (Possible)
Almost all Android phones are equipped with 4-inch display at present. As a result, lots of people consider iPhone 5 should confirm to the trend so as to adopt a larger touch screen.

Support 4G (Less Possible)
Apple iPhone battery life can not be said as satisfactory. Apple has spent the whole year on the functions of iPhone 3G so does iPhone 4G probably. It is not impossible for Apple to release iPhone 5 in September that will support 4G.

Verizon and AT&T (Quite Possible)
Rumors state iPhone 5 is going to be a “global” device which means that it can both support CDMA and GSM. Therefore, it is quite possible for iPhone 5 to support Verizon and AT&T at the same time.

Redesign iOS 5 based on iOS 4 (Possible)
Another reason for the delayed release of iPhone 5 until September lies in that Apple developers need more time to fulfill the development of new iOS 5. Many problems have been exposed especially the messaging system. Now Apple is expected to solve these problems in the new system.

Remove “Home” Key (Less Possible)
Apple may find out another design inspiration from Android phones and then remove the Home button of iPhone. It is not possible for Apple to take advantage of touch keys comprehensively; however, touch sensitive Home button is quite possible.

Brand-new Touch Gesture Control (Quite Possible)
This function has been hidden within iPhone and iPad so it may become a standard of iPhone 5. For example, Apple is capable of supporting 4-finger and 5-finger gesture to revolve applications or back to the main interface. There is a similar gesture within BlackBerry PlayBook so this function may bring excellent touch experience to users.

HD Camera (Possible)
At present, although iPhone 5-million-pixel camera can record HD video, we still expect Apple to make further improvement. Many Android phones are attached with 8-million-pixel camera which has the ability to record 1080p HD video.
From the first iPhone edition, camera has been a standard configuration of iPhone so it is quite reasonable for Apple to upgrade iPhone 5 camera.

Similar to iPhone 4 in Appearance (Less Possible)
Some people think that iPhone 5 will make a minor upgrade in appearance based on iPhone 4. That is to say, iPhone 5 will be the same with iPhone 4 in appearance while different in internal configuration, for instance, iPhone 5 will be equipped with faster processor and more RAM.

Brand-new Look (Quite Possible)
Rumors say that Apple will redesign the appearance of iPhone 5, may be a lighter body and a larger display. The upgraded products of Apple will be with a lighter and thinner body so iPhone 5 will not be an exception.

iPhone 5 32GB and iPhone 5 64GB (Possible)
Earlier before the release of iPhone 4, many people predicted that Apple will launch 64GB version iPhone. So Apple is likely to add the 64GB version to the next generation of iPhone. If it is true, the 16GB version will become a historical stuff.

Near Field Communication Paying Function (Less Possible)
Near Field Communication is the first function in iPhone 5 features speculation. People suppose that Apple will put built-in near field communication chips to iPhone 5 which can connect iPhone with credit card or bank account, so as to enable users to pay through iPhone.

A5 Processor (Almost For Sure)
iPhone 5 will be equipped with A5 processor just as iPad 2. This is adhere to the idea that Apple “i” series products should be the same in hardware configuration.

iPhone 5 Will Be the First to Adopt iCloud? (Possible)
French media Consomac found out that Apple MobileMe service change its name to Castle in Mac OS X Lion beta version. Castle is the upgraded version of Apple MobileMe service. This means that Castle will become the R&D code of iCloud music service.

No “Antennagate” Problem (For Sure)
Of course, Apple will not make the same mistake. iPhone 5 will either adopt built-in aerial or external aerial.

iPhone “Nano” cheap version (Impossible)
Similar rumor will exist before the release of a new iPhone version but none of them become real.

A 3D Display for Games and Movies (Impossible)
In the near future, it is quite difficult for Apple to build up relationship with 3D technology. 3D display is expensive and power consumption. There are still rumors that iPhone 5 can support 3D applications and movies.

The Back Side Does Not Employ Glass Shell Any Longer (Possible)
There is assumption that iPhone 4 will not adopt glass shell but metal case.

Apple Release iPhone 5 in September (Possible)
Lots of evidences prove that iPhone 5 will make a debut in September. The most striking evidence will be the release of white iPhone 4 for Apple is impossible to launch a new product two months after the previous one.

Apple CEO Timothy D. Cook: iPhone 5 Does Not Support LTE Technology

According to Medias, during the analysts teleconference this week, Apple CEO Tim Cook had said that LTE technology (also be remarked as 4G technology) chipset asked for concessions on mobile phone design, but Apple would not accept some of these concessions. This means that the forthcoming iPhone 5 will not adopt LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology. Cook had ever indicated that the first-generation LTE technology chipset had forced mobile phone devices to make numerous concessions and some of them could not be accepted by us. Insiders point out that with the debut of iPhone 5 which will be released in September this Fall, it properly supports the current 3G technology. At the same time, it may also support AT&T as well as HSPA+ technology supported by part of operators all over the world.

What does it mean to Verizon? Verizon CFO Fran Shammo had made a statement that the next generation Apple iPhone can be said as global which can support both CDMA and GSM. Currently, the CDMA version iPhone 4 and iPad 2 take advantage of Qualcomm MDM6600 that is released long time ago. Rumors from market suggest that iPhone 5 will be similar to iPhone 4 in appearance and is the same with iPad 2 in A5 dual-core processor. In addition, Apple will also consider making iPhone 5 support Verizon CDMA 1X audio and EV-DO data.

Since iPhone 5 will not support LTE technology then what about iPhone 6? It is almost for sure that iPhone 6 is going to support LTE technology. Supposing that iPhone 6 will be released in 2012, what so Qualcomm have to do at present?

Back to February, Qualcomm made a demo of its latest chipset MDM9615 to the public. MDM9615 will support LTE technology, DC-HSPA+, EV-DO Rev-B and TD-SCDMA. It may be used with A6 processor cooperatively. MDM9615 chipset is going to be revealed by Qualcomm at the end of this year which offers Apple with plenty of time for iPhone 6 testing and producing.

iPhone 5 Foresight: Adopt LTE, NFC and Natural Language Interface?

With the release of the next generation iPhone steps approaching, predictions about iPhone 5 have been gone underway among Medias. It is reported that the improvements of iPhone 5 probably including: Natural Language Interface, LTE and NFC.

Natural Language Interface
What can be called Natural Language Interface is to carry out intelligent data processing consists of search, assistant and voice navigation through user natural language recognition. Supposing that iPhone 5 will employ natural language interface results from Apple’s two acquisitions. One is to purchase Siri—a company that develops virtual personal assistant, including voice recognition, natural language interface and semantic network search. The other is to purchase PlaceBase—a map development company which focuses on map enhancement by using private and public data. The two acquisitions plus Apple’s underway data centre make people suspect that the next action Apple is going to take will be natural language interface.

LTE Chip
As we all know that Verizon has launched LTE and AT&T is going to launch LTE network. The second assumption is that Apple is likely to follow their steps—employing HP upgraded LTE chip so as to achieve compatibility between iPhone 5 and AT&T, iPhone 5 and Verizon network.

NFC Function
According to the statement of analyst Peter Misek, iPhone 5 is probably to adopt HP’s new chip with GPS and WiFi integrated, and the future Socket will support Bluetooth and NFC. More cloud services will be put into Apple’s next generation operating system. However, the completion of this work will be beyond the expected period and the release of iOS will be put off until this summer or autumn.
